Ferguson: One Strike, Iran Could be Out

In light of President Bush’s WWIII warning if Iran continues progress on weapons grade uranium production that could lead to a nuclear arsenal, an Iranian General spouted that the Islamofascist nation could launch 11,000 missiles in a moment if America and its coalition of the willing attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. In other words Iran is saying if you rattle your sabers we can rattle our sabers.

Historian Niall Ferguson had predicted in January (well a fictional potential prediction) 2006 that a massive war would begin in the Middle East as a result of Iran’s nuclear program. Ferguson even thought there might a nuclear exchange between Israel and Iran.

Ferguson has written some updated thoughts to that 2006 opinion article. I get the impression Ferguson believes that Iran still should be prevented from acquiring the kind of nuclear power that results in nuclear weapons. In the present though he believes America would have a more difficult time accomplishing a preventative military strike because American allies and pseudo-allies are not hip to the idea.

Plus Ferguson points out that the locations of U.S. Aircraft Carriers are not conducive to an immediate strike, there is only one currently in the Persian Gulf area.

Ferguson also ponders since most of the national attention on American leadership is on candidates running for President, would President Bush be so bold as to unilaterally strike Iranian nuke sites.

Read Ferguson’s Op-Ed to get the specific and fascinating thoughts on a nuclear Iran.
