1Million Turks to the Streets Against Islamism


At least one million Turks poured into the streets of Istanbul (once Christian Constantinople) to protest radical Islamist policies of the current elected Parliamentary government of Prime Minister Erdogan. Even military elites of Turkey are warning Erdogan to chill with the social Islamist policies of Erdogan’s government.

I have to admit I was dubious of Turkey once Erdogan became Prime Minister with Parliamentary coalition. I had been convinced at that time that Mohammedanism did not have people dynamic enough to transform medieval Sharia thinking to a 21st Century secular democracy. In Muslim lands I am all for the dominant culture to adhere to its foundations such as prayer and rituals; however the penalties of Sharia Law are barbarically medieval.

One million protestors are calling for the secular way established by
Ataturk who abolished many social conventions of Mohammedanism to allow a secular Republic to emerge. Granted Turkey has had its problems: the Turkish military has often abrogated governments that did not follow military guidance.

If Turkish Mohammedans can transform that could be a sign of a socio-religious transformation. If only the Turks could find someone with the charisma of Ataturk’s secularism and the spiritual consciousness of an Imam united as one, then Mohammedanism could join the globe of tolerated and tolerating religions. If not …
