There have a lot of rumors which both the Thompson and McCain camps deny, that Thompson is staying in the race through South Carolina to take votes away from Romney and Huckabee to the benefit of McCain.
The latest media outlet of this rumor mill is the Washington Post.
The thing about rumors is that sometimes they are also timed to undermine the resolve of voter support. Undecided voters that lean toward Thompson which hear this rumor might vote another candidate merely to feel that their vote counts for something.
WaPo implies that McCain and Thompson are friends and have cooked up an alliance. Further that implication is that a McCain nomination would mean some bonus for Thompson, possibly a Vice Presidential nomination.
Hmm … a McCain/Thompson ticket: A cantankerous independent minded centrist teamed up with a true Conservative of record. I would rather it be the other way around; however the logical reality is such a team could seriously challenge any Democratic nominee that many Leftists and centrists believe it is a foregone conclusion will win the Presidency in November 2008.
I am a loyalist; I am a Fred head until the bitter end or the glorious victory. It is merely a matter if Fred decides to stick it out.
If there is an alliance between McCain/Thompson I could leave with the reality of a ticket I think can beat Hillary or Obama.
On the other hand I truly believe Thompson should present his Conservative credentials to the voters through Super Tuesday or Tsunami Tuesday (depending on who you listen to). Accept for supporting the McCain/Feingold legislation, there is hardly any blight on Thompson’s record. He is fiscally and socially Conservative.
After Super Tuesday and the numbers clearly show Thompson cannot reach the nomination, a McCain/Thompson would be awesome. For one thing McCain is not a spring chicken and I cannot see him running for a second term. Thompson would be a great heir apparent to follow McCain.
