Is There A Russian Covert Agenda a Missile Umbrella Screws Up?

Evidently Putin of Russia still thinks the nation has cajones. Putin is suspending an arms control treaty signed back in Soviet days in 1990 and amended in 1999 to reflect the current political scene of the Russian Federation minus much of former Republics of the Communist Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

Obviously Eastern Europeans formerly controlled as client States under the domination of the former USSR are a bit nervous of Russian re-assertion as a regional hegemon. Thus Eastern Europe’s mistrust has bought into a missile shield publicly designed to ward off missiles from rogue nations such as Iran. (Incidentally, was it not Russia that provided those missiles to Iran? Or from China? Or from North Korea? Or some sort of amalgam covert arms scheme from all three? Hmmm …?)

Clearly America is not an aggressor like Adolf or Napoleon. I doubt the relatively recently freed East European nations have the chutzpah to aggressively first strike an attack on Russia. So why would Russia protest so much about a defensive missile umbrella?

Could it be Putin’s Russia has designs to regain its empire after a chaotic geopolitical event takes place in the Middle East? Again I say, “Hmmm …”

Crimes against Humanity by Former East European Communists

Well here is something I have never really thought of: Eastern Europe was under the grip of Soviet Communism from the end of WWII until the “Evil Empire” (Ronald Reagan) fell. There were horrendous acts of repression by puppet Communist governments executed upon the citizens of various Eastern European nations.

John O’Sullivan of the Hudson Institute basically asks, “Why has not the East European post Soviet governments investigated and adjudicated obvious and potential monsters that committed crimes against humanity in the name of the various Communist States?”

It is a fascinating query is it not? You would think after the Cold War at least the victors would ask for justice would you not?

The thing is the Cold War ended not by military engagement, but by a combination of a Reagan military build up and a Soviet economic collapse. Not a shot was fired or nuclear missile exchanged. The Soviet Evil Empire simply collapsed buried by Western (particularly American) economic resources in which the Soviets could not keep up.

The people of the East European nations shook off the chains of Communism with most adopting a democratic mode of government (some are actually dictatorships having not learned the lessons of the past).

I guess I disagree with O’Sullivan. These people are more than capable to decide if Justice or Mercy should be distributed for the past repression of Communist Secret Police (or the various names they went by). Possibly Mercy was the quickest way to heal a national conscience and move forward free from the interference of foreign governments dictating Political Policy across the board nationally and internationally.

Putin: Have the Missile Defense System in Azerbaijan Rather than Europe

Hmmm … I don’t know about you but I have little trust for Vladimir Putin. He was an old Soviet KGB fox. This means he was involved in espionage to counter American National Interests and a global scale under the defunct Communist Soviet Union.

Putin has made crystal clear his objection to a missile defense umbrella being built in Europe to the point of threatening to posture the Russian military in an offensive mode to counter any perceived attack advances from that missile shield.

America’s stand for the defensive shield is the ongoing pursuit of Iran to make weapons grade uranium that could be used in Iranian missiles that can easily reach Eastern and Western Europe. Putin does not buy that scenario. Evidently Putin comprehends that Russian endorsement and aid to Iran with its nuclear program could make Russia a target as well as Iran.

So what does the former old KGB fox propose to Bush at the G8 Summit? Putin suggests placing the American made missile defense shield in Azerbaijan, a Mohammedan nation formerly of the USSR and somewhat north of Iran. Bush has to ask, “How this benefits Russia and what are the implications to America?”

A missile shield in Azerbaijan could obviously stave off an Iranian missile attack if detection was rapid. There is even the potential of being a shield to Israel and ironically to Russia itself in the case of an Iranian missile attack.

However an Azerbaijan location could be a set up for a first strike removal of the missile umbrella by Russia to enable an in concert attack by Iran (and potentially China). The appearance to me is a total benefit for Russia depending on which ever way the geopolitical winds blow.
